ABOUT ME

My Story

My name is Isabel Long and I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Spanish Language and International Health. After my graduation in May 2023, I plan to immerse myself in work that is oriented in helping others. Growing up, my parents instilled in me a passion for experiencing different cultures. From traveling to India, Mexico, and Europe I have been fortunate to experience cultural immersion at a young age, and I am now inspired to make it a future goal to continue exploring the world and gaining new experiences. My minor is Nonprofit Leadership, and with these studies, I plan to serve a health-based nonprofit organization that benefits underserved populations. During my time at Clemson, I have done research on water and sanitation and hope to pursue that field in the future. I strive to treat everyone with empathy and compassion and hope to build relationships with people from all walks of life. I believe that everyone should have access to healthcare, sanitation, and clean drinking water; I will work to positively impact the lives of those who don’t.

COURSEWORK

My education has not only provided the foundation for the rest of my experiences, but has also made me a lifelong learner who is eager to gain more skills and knowledge. Please read through my coursework that demonstrates Spanish linguistic proficiency and my deep understanding of global health.

ANÁLISIS DEL SISTEMA SANITARIO VENEZOLANO

This project is a semester-long literature review on the Analysis of social determinants that
influence the mental health situation of the Latinoamerican population in the United States. This
literature review is one of the projects in college that I am most proud of completing. I learned
how to read and interpret scientific literature in Spanish. The most challenging part of this was
understanding how to read scientific articles in Spanish and using the scientific and professional
language in my writing. The length and depth of this paper was also incredibly challenging, but I
learned many useful scientific writing skills that I will employ in my future career endeavors.

PROJECT BREAK THE CYCLE

Project Break the Cycle was a semester-long partner project on a health intervention plan to be
implemented at Clemson University. My partner and I chose to investigate the issue of substance abuse in greek affiliated undergraduate students. We chose to use the MAP-IT planning framework to implement a plan. Throughout this process I learned the importance of communication while collaborating with a partner. I learned a lot from this project because I saw firsthand how the public health field actually deals with real world problems.

CLIMA POLÍTICO EN ESPAÑA

This essay is what sparked my interest in the political climate of Spain. I didn’t realize the parallels between their political issues and the United States. I have always been interested in politics, maybe I will pursue that in my career later on. I learned much about the context surrounding Spain as this was written the semester before I left to study there. It taught me the importance of keeping myself updated and informed on politics.

CONDICIONES DE AMOR

I wrote this essay while I was abroad in Toledo, Spain. This poem was my favorite
content during the class because I love the way that it was written. The professor for this class
was also my favorite professor abroad, he made all of the literature we consumed interesting. I
think that I did a very in depth reflection on the poem. This was the highest grade that I got in
the class, and my professor congratulated me on my progress, specifically with grammar. While
writing this essay, I was able to relate the poem to my personal life which I want to carry into
essays in the future.

INVESTMENT INTO A BETTER INDIA

In my Global Health class, students were assigned with a semester-long project focusing on the improvement of their choice of a low income country. I chose the country of India to write about how to reach the country’s SDGs because I visited there in 2019. SDG stands for Sustainable Development Goals, which I investigated in this paper. This project helped me to implement the concepts that I learned about in class to a real world scenario. This project helped to show me that global development is something that I want to pursue in the future.

ANÁLISIS DE NOTICIAS DE ESPAÑA

The goal of this assignment was to read and reflect on recent Spanish news articles that relate
to Spanish culture. I learned to navigate and analyze colloquial expressions and terminology that are distinct from the traditional classroom Spanish. This assignment
will help me in the future when reading Spanish news articles and understanding commonly
used phrases and terms. I plan on living in Spain in the future, so this activity was very helpful
and I will reflect on it in the future

STUDY ABROAD

Toledo, Spain

I studied abroad in Toledo, Spain during Spring of 2022. I lived and studied at the Fundación Ortega-Marañón from January to April. Toledo is a historic city in central Spain, known for its medieval architecture, winding streets, and stunning views. The city is just an hour south of Madrid, situated on a hill overlooking the Tagus River.

INTERNSHIP ABROAD

While I was studying in Toledo, I interned at a homeless shelter named Cáritas Diocesana. I shadowed case workers, assisted with administrative work, and helped with food distribution.

REFLECTION ON INTERNSHIP IN SPANISH

This paper is a reflection of my internship experience during my time at Cáritas Diocesana, written in Spanish. The following includes an analysis of the knowledge and skills gained as well as an evaluation of the services and goals of the organization. I was able to gain insight into the differences in healthcare systems between the United States and Spain, specifically in the context of homelessness and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
